Makers Of Supercars Not Hurting Due To Gas Price Hike

By Cornelius Nunev

Though many people have been feeling the pinch of gas costs, supercar makers have hardly noticed. There are a growing number of high performance green cars, but that hasn't stemmed the tide of traditional performance vehicles in the least. The supercar market is just a little more insular than the regular car industry. An individual who can afford a Ferrari can spend a few extra dollars on gas.

More than the Bugatti at McLaren

AutoWeek reports that the sports automobile business McLaren is working on an auto that will come out in 2014. The company that brought the world the F1, the fastest road automobile in the world for nearly a decade, is releasing its new vehicle this year, the MP4-12C, but McLaren is not content to rest on its laurels. Now, McLaren has a new project. The automobile will get about 800 horsepower with its 5-liter motor. The automobile is projected to go from 0 to 200 miles per hour faster than the Bugatti Veyron, go from 0 to 60 in 2.8 seconds and cost more than $500,000.

GM jobs increase with Corvette

To be able to get a new Corvette, GM is putting $131 million into getting a better version of Chevrolet's sports automobile adding about 250 new jobs, reports CNN. The new Corvette won't be ready for release for a few years, but the new positions will open soon at the General Motors plant in Bowling Green, Ky., where the Corvette has been produced since 1981. Information on the automobile isn't accessible yet. There still is not a release date either. Popular Mechanics reports that Chevrolet is considering a new Camaro for 2012 with ZL1 Camaro as the name. The ZL1 will have the same 6.2L V-8 that comes in the Cadillac CTS-V, which produces more than 550 horsepower.

Earth friendly

The environment is not the top priority for auto car makers for sure. Still, some of these auto makers want to help a little bit. McLaren is looking for hybrid vehicle engineers to produce a "green" McLaren. The new 918 Spyder is a car sold by Porsche currently that is a plug-in hybrid that will top out at 199 miles an hour, drives three more miles than the plug-in Prius hybrid can on electric power alone and will go from 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds, states USA Today. It will also get 78 miles per gallon. Ferrari unveiled a hybrid version of the 599 in 2010 and intends to have hybrid versions of all of its automobiles by 2015, according to the Daily Mail. The 599 HY-KERS is the name of the car that can get up to 25 miles per hour while going 200 miles in one hour of driving. It has the same V-12 motor too. Lamborghini declared in 2009 it would have a hybrid out by 2015, according to Popular Science. Even the beasts with remarkable firepower under the hood are going green.
