Women wore several layers of material back during the time of the Civil War that made up the complete ensemble each day. At all times being appropriately covered up was important regardless of the surrounding conditions. The gown provided a unique purpose for each layer of material. The pantalets or bloomers were worn first which would provide the most comfort. The length of material would depend solely on the age of the woman. If the woman were of an older age, her bloomers would reach down toward her ankles.
