The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just announced this year's Top Safety Picks for automobiles. Crash testing is what produces the results and more brand new cars than ever are on the IIHS list. Cars are getting more secure as time goes on. List of secure cars growing every year
Car makers have, over the years, become more and more sensi-tive to the need among customers for safety. Since individuals are more worried about safety in the case of an accident, it is becoming increasingly more essential for vehicles to have safety attributes.
Also, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety list of Top Safety Picks grows annually, as more cars stand up under crash testing.
USA Today reports that the IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2011 were chosen for various 2012 mod-els. There are 115 cars listed for the 2012 Top Safety Picks. That is an enormous increase from 2005 when the list started. There were only 15 automobiles listed that year for IIHS.
Subaru
There were many crash tests done on the cars. The Top Safety Picks includ-ed 38 SUVs, 5 minivans, 3 trucks and 69 automobiles. Of the 115 that made the list, 97 had been on the list from the previous year.
Every Subaru model but the WRX was a Top Model making it the safest brand. Toyota, as reported by CBS, had the most vehicles appearing on the list with 15, such as Lexus and Scion models. The Toyota Camry did well this year. It got onto the list for the first time. With the tougher 2012 crash test ratings, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it a five-star rating.
Of the 18 brand new cars on the list, according to the Washington Post, 10 are by Honda. Honda and Acura had 12 in total.
Other brands which had strong showings incorporated General Mo-tors with 14, Volkswagen and Audi with 13, Ford and Lincoln with 12 and Dodge, Chrysler and Fiat with 11. That also incorporated the Fiat 500, but only models produced after July of this year.
Only three trucks
There weren't a lot of trucks involved in the Top Safety Picks. There were only three declared. Those went to the Toyota Tundra crew cab models, the Honda Ridgeline and the Ford F-150. The Toyota Sienna, the Honda Odyssey, Volkswagen Routan, the Chrysler Town and Country and the Dodge Grand Caravan were the minivans that got on the list.
