Unplanned pregnancy certainly can cause you stop dead in your tracks and panic. If you have not planned on having children it can be overwhelming when deciding what to do. Be reassured that you don't have to panic, however. Depending on your situation there are several avenues of planning to consider.

If you are under the age of 18 and find yourself in this situation the first thing you should do is talk to your family. Understanding that this can be frightening, consider speaking with your family with a counselor or possibly someone from your church. Discuss your options with them, from there formulate a plan on what you will do. Will you raise the baby and if so how much help can you expect from your family? Will you give the child up for adoption? Are you considering terminating the pregnancy and if so do you have support? Regardless of the option you choose there are several agencies or groups that can help you make educated choices.

According to one research firm, approximately 49 percent of all cases in the United States are unplanned. Individuals who find themselves in this sort of situation should know that they are not alone. Many of these individuals are young. Some are even still minors and need a great deal of support in order to make it through this type of situation.

The population with the greatest chance of facing this challenge are teenagers. In these cases, a little of 80 percent of the pregnancies are not planned. Most girls in this situation experienced feelings of total surprise upon learning the news. Lack of access to birth control, not remembering to use birth control properly, and higher fertility are factors that some believe contributes to the greater rates of pregnancy in this age group.

Handling this kind of thing can be challenging and overwhelming at times. The decision that is made should not been made lightly. Carefully consider lifestyle, future goals, moral beliefs, financial circumstances, and the sort of life that a child could have in current circumstances. The choice made will typically be life altering and will also likely be an emotional one as well.

Regardless of how a woman decides to handle an unplanned pregnancy, it is essential to carefully consider options. What works well for one person may not be the best option for another. Be sure to seek out support from friends, family members, and a trusted mentor or counselor to make an informed decision.
