What Does Your Skin Care Brand Say About You?

By Clare Morgan

If there was ever a personality test that can give the Rorschach inkblot test, Carl Jung's 16-type indicator test, and the highly-popular Myers Briggs test a run for their psychology money, it would be the simple act of checking out a woman's skin care kit. You can immediately tell what their worries are by the type - or should I say strength? - of moisturizer they have, if they're the spender or the penny pincher, and even their habits can be revealed by the number of products they own. Here are a few personality categories based on your skin care brands.

Personality Type #1: The Minimalist

You are the Zen master when it comes to skin care brands and products. Instead of less is more, your mantra is less is enough. Typically, your skin care products consist of the basics - cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. And most probably all are from a brand that you're extremely familiar with and have used since you were a kid.

But even if your skin care brands variety leaves much to be desired, you make up for it with your consistency. Because you don't have a lot of skin care products, you're able to strictly follow a regimen. This translates to getting the best out of a product's efficacy because you use them long enough and often enough to see results.

However, you should be careful about tachyphylaxis or better known as you-have-used-the-same-skin care products-for-so-long-that-they-have-already-lost-their-effect condition. Experts like Dr. Jennifer Jones of the British Skin Foundation recommends switching up products every six months to avoid this condition.

Personality Type #2: All Natural, All Organic, All the Way

For you, the real key ingredients to look for in skin care brands are no animal testing, natural, and organic. It's only when you find these in products that you'll even begin to consider making room for it in your environmentally-conscious skin care regimen.

But your strict preference is not without warrant, as there is no agency - government, non-profit, or private - that regulates cosmetics and skin care products. So without any set of rules, the world of skin care brands is comparable to the Wild Wild West. This means that even the best skin care line can have products that contain harmful chemicals such as lead, mercury, and other nasties.

To make sure which products are all certified natural and organic, you should visits sites such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Both websites have an extensive list of brands that pledge to be transparent about the ingredients that they use in their products.

Personality #3: The Me Versus Wrinkles Woman

If a skin care line has a product that effectively gets rid of wrinkles, then hands down it's the best one for you. You're not a penny pincher when it comes to exclusive skin care brands either. You're fine shelling out a few extra dollars so long as you get results. So even if you have a variety of brands and products, all of them are meant for only one thing - saving your skin from fine lines and wrinkles.

Just keep in mind that simply because your skin care products do the same thing, doesn't mean that it's okay to mix them all up. Products with copper peptides shouldn't be used together with products that contain Vitamin C as they counteract each other's effects. It's also the same story with Alpha Hydroxy Acids and retinoids which are common in anti-wrinkle products.

Also, even all of the best skin care lines in the world won't be as effective without a healthy lifestyle to complement it. Little things such as eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising at least 30 to 45 minutes a day, and getting enough hours of sleep, help a great deal in having healthy skin. Not forgetting your basics also applies to your anti-wrinkle regimen as well. Did you know that leaving your makeup on at night is the same as stressing out your skin for 10 days? So don't forget the small things like moisturizing regularly, putting on sunblock, and exfoliating twice a month can yield great results in improving wrinkles.
