Top 10 Tips When Traveling With Toddlers

By Rebecca Taylor

Traveling with toddlers can be torture. To a young child, new sights and sounds can be overwhelming and if you're not prepared, then vacation excitement can turn into temper tantrums.

Here are 10 parent-practiced tips to help make traveling with toddlers fun.

Try choosing a family-friendly destination. Instead of choosing the crowded tourist destinations, go for a locale that is accustomed to having kids around.

Your first priority should be safety. Always make sure your child's car seat is properly secured. To help block the sun, you should also use a removable window shade.

Bring some entertainment. It's important to bring games, movies, or anything they can play with during their time in the car. Because of this, they will be less focused on being in the car and it will help pass the time.

Planning rest stops is a must. To break up the monotony if you're driving, stop by every couple of hours or more frequently if necessary. Kids, after being cooped up in a car for a while, need to stretch out. Consider bringing along a ball to kick or throw around during these breaks.

Flexibility is important. Set realistic expectations and let your child soak up the experience at his or her own pace. It would be better if you limit your activities to just one a day. If not, then an over-stimulated toddler is what you could end up with.

Make sure that you have water and plenty of snacks with you. Mini juice cartons and small boxes of cereal, granola bars, and fruits are some of the healthy snacks that you can include.

Bring a beloved item. To help your toddler feel safe and secure, bring a blankie or cuddly toy. It would be good to have a replacement on hand as well. It will save you some heartache should the original get lost.

Start and end your day early. Kids are at their best in the morning, so plan accordingly.

Try to stick to your routine. If your child eats, naps, and plays at the same time each day, then it's likely they may feel comfortable in a new environment.

Take lots of pictures. Enjoy every moment because your kids are only young once.
