How to Put Up Wallpaper with Zero Issues

By Brody Merrywind

One of the best ways to improve the look of your home's interiors is to place patterned paper on the walls. This will make your household much more interesting, allowing you to create a living environment that you can be proud of. To make sure that you apply the right types of wallpaper though, you should double check each roll before you put it up. Look at the colours in direct sunlight so that you can make absolutely sure that each is the same as the next.

You will also need to prepare properly before actually sticking up your wallpaper. The right assortment of tools is essential to completing this task in the most effective manner. Two important items are a pasting table and a plumb line, both of which should be made of quality, reliable materials. You will also require a roller to apply the paste, some PVC glue, a Stanley knife and some sharp blades, a pencil, a sturdy stepladder, some scissors, and a wall covering smoother.

Always remember to make good use of your plumb line. Never go ahead and just hang your wallpaper perpendicular to the ceiling as this can result in it being pasted at an angle instead of directly up and down. In most cases, the ceiling and floor are not parallel, meaning that you will need some other way of determining where the vertical lies. This is where your plumb line enters the picture as it works as a variant of the spirit level.

Avoid putting up paper on walls that have imperfections on them. This is because bumps, cracks and other flaws can then show up through the wallpaper, detracting from the overall look of your interiors. Instead, you should place some lining paper on first. This will hide any defects that the wall may have, giving you a smooth surface on which you can then confidently paste your patterned paper with minimal hassle. While this does add an extra step to the whole process, the end results will be well worth it.

Lastly, you should always make sure to concertina your wallpaper before you put it up. If you do not, you run the risk of accidently sticking sections to the glued walls. Instead, simply fold strips of the paper over each other in a zigzag pattern so that you end up with a length of paper that you can hold easily. In this way, you can then stick the first strip to the wall, then the second, and the third and so on, until you have placed that panel up completely.
