Acupuncture for Migraines

By Sylvia Salcedo Rojas

Many people are suffering today from migraines, especially in our stressful society. There are fours main stages that migraine sufferers go through during an episode these include: predrome, the aura, the attach, and the postrome.

The prodrome is a precursor to what one would generally consider the migraine itself, and is a set of symptoms that occurs a few days before a migraine. This can include general malaise and other disharmonies such as stiffness, gastrointestinal issues and depressed mood. The aura portion of the migraine includes sensory, visual and motor where the sufferer may experience temporary loss of vision or even numbness of limbs.

The attach section of the migraines follows the aura. This phase can last from a few hours a day to four or more days. This part of the migraine has pain in the head that can pulsate or throb. Often times effects these symptoms just affect one side of the head and maybe can have associated nausea and vomiting. The last section is the postdrome, this is where the body feels drained from all the changes in the body or sometimes feels really good because the body is starting to feel normal again.

Lets look at the causes of migraines, these can be lifestyle or biological factors that can cause these symptoms. Strong stimuli such as bright lights and smells can cause migraines. As well as hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or oral contraceptives can also cause migraines. Some foods can cause migraines as well and these include, alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, cheese or MSG.

There is another theory that puts genetics as a main role in migraines suffers. This is connected to serotonin in the body, which is a hormone found in the body. Low serotonin levels can cause the release of neuropeptides that cause pain in the brain.

Acupuncture offers a solution that is both therapeutic and non-invasive, with little-to-no risk of side effects. A trained acupuncturist can work to rebalance energy blockages that may be causing the migraines, and an herbalist can prescribe Chinese herbal formulas that move the problem out of the system. Western medicine's answer to migraines often comes in the form of lifestyle changes (removing triggers) and pharmaceuticals to try and alter the brain chemistry that may or may not be causing the migraines. While taking steps towards health is always a great idea, putting chemicals into the body does not help to get to the root of the problems and can actually make the issue worse. Natural remedies fro migraine treatments are a fantastic alternative that have been used to safely cure migraines for thousands of years. Acupuncture is a great treatment for migraines.
