Why ldeniz in Turkey is a good place to visit

By Emile Gretsky

ldeniz is a small beach resort village on the Aegean Sea. It is located near Fethiye, in Muğla Province, on the south west coast of Turkey. The name "ldeniz" translates into English as "dead sea" or "calm sea", and refers to the secluded blue lagoon on which the resort stands. The lagoon remains calm during even the worst storms, protected as it is by the nearby hills and entered only by a narrow channel.

The lagoon is formed by a curved white strip of sand which stretches far out to sea. The area is a national nature reserve and is famous for its spectacular shades of turquoise and aquamarine. The beach at ldeniz is an official blue flag beach, and is frequently rated amongst the top five beaches in the world by travellers and travel writers. It is one of the most photographed beaches in the Mediterranean and is particularly favoured by sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts.

ldeniz is particularly renowned for its facilities for paragliding. Its wonderful panoramic views, together with the exceptional height of the nearby Babadağ Mountain, have combined to make it one of the best paragliding locations in the world.

One reason for this is the fact that Babadağ Mountain is unusually close to the sea (less than 5km). It is a limestone mountain and is noted for its rich flora. The mountain has two summits. Its principal summit is 1,969 metres (6,460 feet) high, and the secondary summit (called Karatepe) is 1,400 metres (4,593 feet) high.

ldeniz has a typical Mediterranean climate, with warm weather all year round. The average temperature in the daytime remains above 16o Celsius (61o Fahrenheit) even in the depths of winter. During the summer, average daytime temperatures are typically around 30-35o C (86-95o F) but have been known to reach 45o C (113o F).

ldeniz is close to the starting point for the Lycian Way, a long-distance footpath which stretches for approximately 500 km around part of the Turkish coast. The path takes its name from the ancient civilisation which once ruled the area. It is generally preferable to walk the route in spring (February-May) or autumn (September-November), although in the height of summer it is still possible to walk short shady sections of the route.

ldeniz is a beautifully calm and peaceful resort, and is an ideal place for a quiet and relaxing holiday.
