Good Communication is the Secret Ingredient to Internet Marketing Success

By Hannah S. Thompson

When you first start to get into Internet marketing and test the waters a little, it's not hard to become overwhelmed. As you browse through information in articles and online forums, you'll see all types of lists featuring "how you too can be the next big thing!" Those lists likely all negate each other. One will tell you that you should be patient if you want to be the next big thing. Another is going to tell you that you should have a great deal of business savvy. Nonetheless, others will tell you that creativity is the secret to wild and fantastic success. And, of course, you can't forget about all of the people saying that all you have to do is buy their software system if you want to be the next big name in IM!

The truth is that all of these things are important to your success (well, maybe not all of those software packages, but the other stuff). You do need to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you wish to succeed. None of these things count much, though, if you are not able to communicate well with your target audience.

There is more to effective communication than putting up an impressive sales copy. You can get a highly skilled copywriter to create that for you. A pretty site and lengthy FAQ are not what you need for good communication. You can get those by employing good designers and writers. Being effective in communication calls for learning to handle interpersonal communication as well as your copy and web site. How do you get that?

1. Respond to each e-mail you get in 24 hours or less. This isn't a joke. The email doesn't need to be long. All you have to do is compose a brief message that says something like "I got your e-mail and will be sending you a full answer shortly." When you do this, try including a reference to the original e-mail. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the autoresponders that other Internet marketers use.

2. Answer calls. Avoid screening telephone calls. If your phone rings, pick it up by the third ring. Do so even if you genuinely have no desire to talk to the person calling you. There is, nonetheless, an exemption to this rule. You don't need to be anxious about being close to your phone aroudn the clock. Rather, specify clear business hours during which you can answer calls. Put out these hours on your web site and in your voice mail message also. And, obviously, every caller who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.

3. Ensure that the people you send messages and emails to really have received those emails. This indicates to them that you care about your correspondence with them. You'll endear yourself further with the people you work with and who purchase from you if you ask them if they have any questions and follow up to make sure that they understood the points you were trying to make.
