To Pack Or Not To Pack - What To Let The Moving Company Pack

By Craig Sempler

If you are moving, you know that a big part of the process is packing and unpacking. Many moving companies can pack for you, saving time for you to focus on the many other issues involved in moving.

Packing is an extra charge from moving companies, but it may be worth it once you factor in how much time it will take for you to pack yourself. Also, while companies charge for packing and supplies, they probably get better rates on supplies than the average person.

Having a professional moving company pack at least a few items might be a good idea. Professional movers know how to crate artwork and mirrors and how to pack large and breakable items. You might pack basic things yourself and leave more difficult items to your mover. Using a mover to pack only certain items can also cut your costs.

While the moving company may have an impeccable reputation, it is wisest for you to pack special valuables, such as jewelry, coin collections, important papers and anything else that is highly valuable or extremely difficult to replace. A dinner plate is an easy item to replace; your grandmother's pearl brooch is not. So pack it and transport it yourself.

If you opt to pack up the house yourself, stock up on plenty of supplies. In addition to boxes in a variety of sizes, you need packing tape, packing paper and markers to identify the contents of your boxes. In addition to listing the general contents of a box, clearly add the name of the room where you want the movers to place it. This will make unpacking a lot easier.

Also be sure your boxes aren't too heavy. Whether it is you or your mover that is picking up all of the boxes, anything heavier than 50 pounds is probably not a great idea. Most boxes are not built to hold that much weight anyway. Place heavy items such as books in smaller, more manageable boxes.
