Some Ideas For Kitchen Lights

By Lisa Heart

Back in the day the kitchen wasn't a social hangout like it is today. It was simply meant for preparing food and that's about it. Kitchens weren't cozy like they are now, but the bigger factor was lighting.

One of the more popular lighting options during the old days was hanging fluorescent tubes. They were placed in the middle of the ceiling to maximize light throughout the entire room. As bright as these lights were, they didn't provide the cozy feel home owners were looking for.

Things have changed. More and more people spend time in the kitchen hanging out. Kitchens now include design elements that help to make it more of a social environment, such as breakfast bars, kitchen islands and plasma TVs with social areas. However, many kitchens are still behind in providing the most effective lighting.

Recessed ceiling lights are the most common lights found in the kitchen. They do provide light, but they're ineffective when it comes down to helping with things like chopping or reading cooking instructions. Most counter tops are up against the wall, which creates a shadow when you're working in these areas.

In order to properly omit enough light for the daily duties in a kitchen, you'll need additional background lights combined with recessed lighting. There are many different ways to provide this extra lighting.

Pendant lights and strip lighting (for wall units) are two of the most popular options. Pendant lights will give you some bright lights as they hang over your prep area or your breakfast bar while creating a chic look. Strip lights go great in or even under a wall unit to provide some extra light on the counters.

If you're uncertain about what size lights to use, the size of the wall unit can help figure this out. One popular lighting design on a glass wall unit has been including the lighting inside the glass wall unit. LED lighting is a great way to add a touch of modern style and provide the extra light needed in the kitchen.

As you shop around, do not rush the process. There are many different ways to add light to your kitchen and once you're complete with this project you'll enjoy cooking and lounging in the kitchen even more!
